“What is the first name of the woman who cleans our offices?”the CEO of a large company asked his staff at their weekly meeting.

Surely this was some kind of a joke, the workers’ thought. They had often seen her. She was of medium build, had er … dark hair and was probably in her 30’s. One of the workers stood up and asked; “Sir, why should we know her name? What do we care what she calls herself?”

The boss replied: “During the course of your careers, you will meet many people.  Remember that:

  • Each one is significant
  • Each person deserves your attention
  • Each individual deserves your care
  • Each deserves your attention and care even if all you do is smile and say ‘hi.’”

By the way, her name is Francine. Remember that there are smart cleaners out there too; cleaners who work at the job to earn money in order to pay for their education. You never know … but one of These people might one day be your boss.

The women and men in that room never fotgot what they learned that day.

The following came to mind as I was writing the above:

“Don’t be so humble – you are not that great.” said by Golda Meir to a visiting diplomat.
