THE FAMILY SECRET
It is extremely difficult for a teenager to have to deal with a mentally ill brother. As much as they may love him, they find his weird behavior embarrassing and their worst nightmare is that the kids at school will find out and start making their lives a misery. As if it is not bad enough and sad enough to have a brother who is hounded by voices in his head that others cannot hear, kids often tell jokes about mental illness.
I know that our daughters might have wanted to speak up. They wanted to but simply could not and that made them feel even worse. It’s a real catch 22 situation.
There are many famous people who have admitted to having suffered from any of the following:-
Depression, Bipolar Disorder (also known as Manic Depressive Illness), Schizophrenia, OCD (Obsessive, Compulsive Disorder) as well as Phobias.
Mentally ill people can be found all over the world and one in every hundred of them suffer from schizophrenia – and that’s without taking into account other mental illnesses.
